Hematuria (Newborn)
By Philip E. Gleason, MD
Occasionally a newborn child will have blood in the urine. This is most often seen with children that may be in the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit. It can be evaluated by the Neonatologists or Urologically with an ultrasound and x-rays of the kidneys and bladder. Kidney function can be assessed by blood work, possibly by a Nephrologist. Fortunately, it is usually mild and can be diagnosed and treated conservatively without long term difficulties.
